CREATING YOUR OWN PATTERNED PAPER, IT’S EASY!

Hi Stampers!

When it comes to patterned paper I have more than enough, but sometimes I enjoy creating my own. It’s easy to do, it doesn’t take long, and I can make multiple cards from the design I stamp on one 8 1/2” x 11” piece of cardstock. Let’s take a look at today’s sample cards:

CREATING YOUR OWN PATTERNED PAPER - IT’S EASY!

STAMPING THE DESIGN

Here is the design I stamped on an 8 1/2” x 11” piece of white cardstock.

THIS IS MY PROCESS

1. I chose 3 images: the flower, the bee, and the dots. The flower and bee images are created with 2 stamps each - the outline stamp and the filler stamp. I like to pair larger images with smaller ones, and add a filler, like the dots.

2. I chose 3 ink colors - the black, mostly for outlines, the yellow for pops of color, and the aqua color to tie things together. I prefer to work with at least three colors, but no more than 5. That is my comfort range, yours might be different.

3. I begin my stamping with the largest image (flower), starting in the center of the paper, and stamping in no certain pattern as I stamp outward. I leave quite a bit of space between the images. Do not be afraid to stamp off the edges of the paper.

4. Next I stamp the smaller image (bee) in the same manner as the first.

5. Finally I add the mage from the 3rd stamp and fill in any large white spaces.

CUTTING THE STAMPED CARDSTOCK

1. First I cut the cardstock into quarters - each piece measures 5 1/2” x 4 1/4”. Cutting the paper into smaller pieces makes working with the cardstock easier for me. There are other methods one can use, such as measuring and drawing the cutting lines.

2. I design card layouts based on each 5 1/2” x 4 1/4” piece of cardstock.

CARD LAYOUTS

SIMPLE MATTED FOCAL PANEL

* Card base - cardstock 11” x 4 1/4” scored and folded at 5 1/2”
* Mat - cardstock cut at 5 3/8” x 4 1/8”
* Stamped Panel - trim to 5 1/4” x 4”
* Sentiment - banner that is 3 1/4” x 1” I added a 4” piece of ribbon under the sentiment
* Inside panel - white or light colored cardstock - 5 1/4” x 4”

TWO CARDS FROM ONE DIAGONALLY CUT PANEL

* Card bases - Two cut at 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”
* Stamped Panel - 5 1/2” x 4 1/4” cut in half diagonally; one panel will cover the top half of one card base, the other will cover the bottom half of the other card front.
* Sentiments - larger sentiment stamped on white cardstock and matted on another color of cardstock
* Diagonally cut cardstock about 1/4” - 3/4” wide must be long enough to cover the very centers of the cards front from corner to corner.
* Inside panels - cut two at 5 1/2” x 4” from white or light colored cardstock

HALF PANEL CARD

* Card base - 11” x 4 1/4” scored and folded at 5 1/2”
* Stamped panel - 4 1/4” x 2”
* Cardstock strip - 4 1/4” x 3/4” (I added a die cut on top of the strip)
* Inside panel - white or light cardstock cut at  5 1/4” x 4”

Note - the remainder of the stamped panel will be used on a mini slimline card.

CENTERED MATTED PANEL CARD

* Card base - 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”
* Cardstock mat - 5” x 3 3/4”
* Stamped panel - Trim last panel to 4 3/4” x  3 1/2”
* Inside panel - White or light colored cardstock cut at 5” x 3  3/4”

SLIMLINE WITH OFFSET GREETING

* Card base - 7” x 6 1/4” scored at folded at 3 1/2” along the 7” side
* Stamped panel - 4 1/4” x 3” (this is the piece left over from the Half Panel card)
* Mat 1 - 4 1/2” x 3 1/4”
* Mat 2 - 4 3/4” x 3 1/2”
* Sentiment - 3 nesting dies, circles  - 1 5/8”, 2 1/8”, and 2 5/8” diameters
* Inside panel - white or light colored cardstock 6” x 3 1/4”

SEASHORE CARDS

This is another set of cards I created using the same process as for the floral and bees cards above.

SIMPLE FOCAL PANEL

The layout for these two cards is the same, the only difference is the width and placement of the greeting.

* Card base - 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”
* Focal panel - patterned cardstock cut at 5 1/4” x 4”
* Greeting - white cardstock cut at 5 1/4” x 3/4” with a mat that is 5 1/4” x 1” or 5 1/2” x 7/8” with a mat that is 5 1/2” x 1  3/8”
* Inside panel - white or light colored cardstock cut at 5 1/4” x 4”

DIAGONAL CUT LANDSCAPE LAYOUT

Once again two cards are made from one stamped panel. These are put together just like the floral & bees cards above, only the orientation of these cards I’d landscape as opposed to portrait.

HALF PANEL CARDS

Each of the cards below were created using 1/2 of a 5 1/2” x 4 1/4” panel in landscape orientation. He panels are 4 1/4” x 2 3/4”.

* Card base - 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”
* Stamped panel 4 1/4” x 2 3/4”
* Mat - 4” x 3”
* Greeting - white cardstock 2 1/4” x 2 1/8”
* Greeting mat - 2 1/2” x 2 3/8”
* Inside panel - 5 1/4” x 4”

* Card base - 11” x 4 1/4” scored and folded at 5 1/2”
* Stamped panel - 4 1/4” x 2 3/4”
* Mat - 4 1/2” x 3”
* Greeting - white cardstock 3” x 1/2”
* Mats for greeting - 3” x 1” and 3” x 1 1/4”
* Inside panel - white or light colored cardstock cut at 5 1/4” x 4”

IMAGES OR SENTIMENTS - YOU CAN CHOOSE!

Instead of stamping images, try stamping sentiments, or both as I did in for these cards. When I stamp sentiments for backgrounds I usually (not always) stamp them  diagonally. It is easier to keep things straight and if there are a few not so straight
