Hi Stampers!
Today we’ll take a look at different ways to use decorative masks (stencils) to create cards. Of course we can use them as traditional stencils, but we can also use stencils to dry emboss, use them to heat emboss designs, or use them as masks! There are just so many ways to use these handy little tools!!! I used the Artistic Mix Decorative Masks from Stampin’ Up!®️ to create the following cards:
ARTISTIC MIX DECORATIVE MASKS
The following cards were made using a retired decorative mask . I do not remember the collection this mask was part of, or when it was available. I used it because its damask design is great showcasing embossing paste techniques. Let’s take a look at the cards:
STENCILS AND BLENDING BRUSHES
This card was created by simply using two stencils, ink, and blending brushes. You can substitute sponge daubers or sponges for the blending brushes if you like.

* Stamp the Greeting with Copper Clay ink.
* The greeting is attached to the card front with dimensionals
USING STENCILS TO DRY EMBOSS
It is possible to dry emboss cardstock with stencils.Not all stencils are good candidates for this technique. I have found smaller, less open designs do not always produce a great image. Sometimes it is a matter of trial and error. Here is the sandwich I used with my Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine:
- base plate (1), stencil, cardstock, embossing mat,cutting plate (3).
If you do not have an embossing mat use a 8 1/2” x11” piece of cardstock folded in half. You might also need a piece of printer paper folded in half. As machine calibrations differ a bit, a little experimentation will be necessary.
SUPPLIES FOR THIS CARD
* Stamp set - Celebrate With Tags
* Card base - Pretty Peacock cut at 8 12” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”
* Inside panel - Pool Party cardstock 5 1/4” x 4”
* Mat - Basic Black cardstock - 5 1/4” x 5”
* Focal panel - Basic White cardstock - 5” x 3 3/4”
* Greeting - Basic Black and Basic White cardstock for stamping and die cutting
* Inks - Pool Party, Lost Lagoon, Pretty Peacock
* Blending brushes
* Stencil - small square design
* Countryside Corners Dies - 3rd and 4th smallest
* Embellishment of choice- I used Black Matte Dots (retired item). I did not realize they retired. It is always good to use what you have.
* Adhesive and dimensionals
ASSEMBLY NOTES
* Place stencil on Basic White focal panel. Use washi tape or other low tack tape to create a “hinge” along the top of the stencil and cardstock this will hold the two together and allow you to check and see if you need to add another shim to achieve a deeper embossed image. Create your embossing sandwich following my suggestions above.
* Once the focal panel is embossed, use the blending brushes to apply the inks in a hombre type pattern and apply ink to the Basic White cardstock that is for the sentiment.
* Stamp the sentiment with Pretty Peacock ink, die cut it and the mat (Basic Black) with the Countryside Corners dies.
* Adhere the pieces to the card, placing the sentiment on dimensionals.
USING A NEGATIVE STENCIL (MASKING)
This technique is basic masking. I used the cut out piece from the label stencil to create a mask the left a white label shape on the focal panel - a perfect place for the greeting! I held the cut out in place with washi tape on the left side as I added ink to the right side of the panel and vice-a-versa. I left this piece in place as I added the leaf images.

* Mat - 4 5/8” x 3 3/8”

* The entire matted focal panel is popped up on dimensionals

* Once the stencil is covered lift the stencil off the cardstock.
* Sprinkle embossing powder over the cardstock and flick off any stray embossing powder.
* Heat set with heat tool, and allow to cool a few moments.
* Go over the entire piece of embossed cardstock with a blending brush and Copper Clay ink. I applied more ink in some areas than other.

IMPORTANT NOTE
A lot of Versa Mark will remain on the stencil after making these cards. I asked my stencil with warm soapy water, and used a soft cloth to gently sipe off the residue. I rinsed the stencil in warm water, used a towel to dry off excess water, then allowed the stencil to air dry completely before putting it away.
WHAT I LEARN USING THIS TECHNIQUE
This technique taught me trying new things can lead to surprising results, like the Wild Wheat card. I actually like the card, even though I was not expecting such a distressed look. I almost threw the card panel away, but I am so glad I did not.
I think stencils with larger opening might work better for this technique than the stencil I used. I will need to try it and see.
I learned a little Versa Mark goes a long way!
STENCILS AND EMBOSSING PASTE
I made the following three cards using a stencil and embossing paste. The stencil is a retired Stampin’ Up! Decorative Mask. It has a damask design. I do not know what group of stencils it was included with or the name of the stencil collection. I chose it, because the design is larger and the elements are well spaced. I felt it would showcase the techniques a little better than a smaller design. I also used other retired items to create some of the cards. Remember - go through your stash and use what you have, before purchasing more . I have found using what I have makes me feel so much better than being a collector!
NOTE - For each of the next three cards you will need:
* palette knives or something to mix and spread the embossing paste
* a piece of acetate or small shallow container for embossing paste
* a small tub, plastic shoe box, etc to hold soapy warm water for soaking and cleaning tools having embossing paste on them
* paper towels
NOTE - Always place stencils, palette knives, etc on warm water and clean after using embossing paste. Embossing paste tends to set rather quickly and can become difficult to remove once set.
