Hi Stampers!

I don’t know about you, but I have a love- hate relationship with 6” x 6” papers. I like the smaller size as it is easier for me to store. Yer, it frustrates me, because most times I cut the 6” x 6” paper at 4” x 5 1/4” and end up with a pile of scrap pieces that measure 4” x 3/4”, and another pile that measure 2” x 6”.  I try to remember to use the smaller pieces to stamp and / or die cut smaller images. As for the 2” x 6” I have a couple of go to card layouts that are perfect for using the scraps. One of the layouts I call  the Around the Block Card. This card has other names, but whatever the name , basically you create a frame that goes around the edge of the card base or card panel creating a block in the center - thus the name - Around the Block Card! I use my 2” x 6” scraps to creates the frames for these cards.  Let’s take a look at the cards!

Creating these cards is quick and easy. The card takes 2 strips of patterned paper cut at 1” x 3” and two strips cut at 1” x 4 1/4”. The block in the center will measure 2” x 3 1/4”.

BASIC MEASUREMENTS FOR THE AROUND THE BLOCK CARD

CARD MEASUREMENTS 

* Card base - A-2 card; 4 1/4” x 11” scored and folded at 5 1/2” or 5 1/2” x 8 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”

* Focal panel - Basic White (or color of choice), cut at 5 1/4” x 4” - the frame will be adhere to this piece 

   NOTE - if you prefer to assemble the frame directly on the card base you will need a piece of Basic

   White cardstock (or color of choice) cut at 2” x 3 1/4” for focal panel that fits inside the frame.

* Two matching pieces of Designer Series Paper (DSP) cut at 1” x 3” and two other coordinating pieces of DSP cut at 1” x 4 1/4”

Just a couple of cuts, and a bit of scoring creates an impressive greeting card perfect for the Holidays, or any occasion! Both stamp sets contain fun whimsical images perfect for creating cards with lots of Holiday cheer! Of course the Center Step Card works well with any stamp set you care to use. CENTER STEP CARD CUTTING & SCORING DIAGRAM

* Cut card base 8 1/2” x 5 1/2”. 

* Along 5 1/2” side place cardstock at 1” mark and cut from 1 1/2” to 5 1/4”.  Remove cardstock from trimmer, flip it over and repeat the process.

* Along the 8 1/2” side of the cardstock at 1 1/2” score from the outside of the cardstock to the cut line.

   Repeat at 2 1/2” mark, and repeat at the 5 1/4” mark. Flip the cardstock and repeat on other side.

* At the 4 1/4” mark score between the cut lines.

* Fold - the score lines at 2 1/2” are valley folds; all other folds are mountain folds.

* Now your card base is ready for you to create a terrific card.

NOTES -

* I used Garden Green ink for the trees. Ink the stamp, stamp off then stamp the tree on the cardstock. Ink up the detail stamp and stamp on the tree. This creates a two tone look adding depth and dimension to the trees.

* I used the Tree Lot Dies to die cut the trees and the tree trunks. The tree trunks are die cut from Crumb Cake cardstock. These dies are no longer available. The trees are not difficult to fussy cut, and the tree trunks are 1/4” wide x 1/2” long.

NOTE - The Stampin’ Blends alcohol I k will bleed through the Basic White cardstock. This issue can be avoided by using a separate piece of Basic White cardstock that measures 4 1/8” x 3 3/8” for the focal image. Simply adhere it to the card front- there will be a 1/8 “ border around the focal panel. The placement of the greeting will need to be adjusted.
