WHAT’S YOUR ANGLE? CREATING CARDS WITH DIAGONAL CUTS

 Hi Stampers!

Today we’ll add some variety to our card making by using backgrounds with diagonal cuts. Using diagonally cut backgrounds is easy to do, and there are so many ways to incorporate diagonal cuts in backgrounds pieces. Let’s look at today’s sample cards:

WHAT’S YOUR ANGLE?
CREATING CARDS WITH DIAGONAL CUTS
VIDEO

SUPER EASY CORNER TO CORNER DIAGONAL CUTS BACKGROUND

This corner to corner diagonal background is super easy to create. For my cards I used a piece of two-side patterned paper (DSP) cut at 3 3/4” x 5”.  I placed the DSP in the paper trimmer diagonally with the opposite corners lined up in the cutting groove. I cut the DSP and ended up with two triangle shaped pieces of paper.

OPTIONS FOR CREATING THE BACKGROUND

1. Adhere both pieces of DSP directly to the card base, lining  up the cut edges to form a 3 3/4” x 5” panel centered on the card front. The paper is double-sided, so flip one piece over to show off both designs and the diagonal aspect of the card.

2. Adhere the two pieces to a 3 3/4” x 5” piece of cardstock for easy alignment, then adhere to the card front.

3. Adhere one triangle to a coordinating piece of DSP cut at 3 3/4” x 5”. This allows for easy line up and gives you more color / pattern choices for your card.

SUPPLIES FOR ALL CORNER TO CORNER SAMPLES CARDS

EASY DIAGONAL CUT BACKGROUND

This angle cut is easy to create. The same options for the Corner to Corner card apply to this design as well. For my card I used three pieces of DSP cut at 3 3/4” x 5”. One I cut into two pieces at an angle and adhered each to one of the remaining pieces of DSP. (See option 3 above.)  To create this angle start with making a mark in pencil on the upper left hand  3 3/4” side of the DSP at 1 1/4”. Now make a mark on the lower right hand 3 3/4” side at 1 1/4”. Line up both marks in the cutting groove of the trimmer and cut. This creates two pieces. Adhere one piece to each of the other two pieces of DSP to form background panels. (Option 3 above)

DIAGONAL STRIPS BACKGROUND

This card background is super simple to create, uses scraps, and adds lots of color to your cards. Simply cut 3/4” wide x 6”+ long strips of DSP and adhere them to a 3 3/4” x 5” piece of cardstock, then trim the excess DSP. If you prefer your strips can be 1/4” or 1/2” wide, or any other width you like. To make the process of adding the strips go faster cover the cardstock with an adhesive sheet, pull off the backing and adhere the strips, and trim. After I put the strips in place I used an embossing folder (Metal Plate) to add a bit of texture.

Place the strips diagonally across the piece of cardstock. Continue until the cardstock is covered. Turn the piece to the backside and trim along the edge of the cardstock.

SUPPLIES FOR THIS CARD
* Cardbase - Parakeet Party A-2 size
* Other cardstock - Basic White - two pieces cut at 3 3/4” x 5” one for inside the card and one to adhere the strips on; Parakeet Party and Basic White cardstock for sentiment
* DSP - Butterfly Kisses
* Sentiment - Pansy Patch stamp set; Stylish Shapes Dies
* Embellishments - Enamel Dots Essentials (5) White
* Embossing Folder - Metal Plate

FLOATING DIAGONAL STRIPS BACKGROUND

This card is a variation of the previous card with one exception - leave a small gap between the strips to create an illusion of a “floating” background piece. Adhere the cardstock strips to a 3 3/4” x 5” piece of Window Sheet. Use Stampin’ Seal or other snail-type adhesive to adhere the strips.

Place the strips of DSP on the window sheet leaving a gap between the strips.

SUPPLIES FOR THIS CARD
* Card base - Soft Seafoam - A-2 size
* DSP - Dainty Flowers (Sale-A-Bration)
* Focal image & Greeting - Hand-penned Petals stamp set and coordinating dies
* Ink - Gorgeous Grape; Stampin’ Blends - Fresh Freesia (light and dark),Polished Pink (light and dark), Daffodil Delight ( light and dark), Soft Seafoam (light and dark)
* Dies - Stylish Shapes Dies
* Embellishments - Rhinestones Basic Jewels (5)

DOUBLE DIAGONAL CUT BACKGROUND CARD

This version of a diagonal background requires a little bit more measuring, but it not difficult, and well worth the effort. After I adhered the diagonally cut DSP to Basic White cardstock I used an embossing folder (Cane Weave) to add some texture and interest to the card.

I started with a piece of  5 1/4” x 4” piece of DSP.  I measured 1 1/2” over from the lower left corner and marked that point. Now measure from the lower left corner of the DSP up to 1 3/4” and mark this point. Now measure from the top left corner 2” and mark the point. Place the DSP in the paper trimmer and line up the 1 1/2” point with the top right corner in the cutting groove and cut. Lastly line up the other two marked point in the cutting grove and cut. Adhere this piece to a 5 1/4” x 4” piece of cardstock.

SUPPLIES FOR THIS CARD
* Card base - Basic White A-2 size
* Background cardstock - Basic White 5 1/4”. X 4”
* DSP - Dandy Designs (Sale-A-Bration) 5 1/4” x 4”
* Sentiment - Alphabet A La Mode Dies and Calypso Coral cardstock about 3” x 6” backed with adhesive sheet trimmed to size
* Embossing Folder - Cane Weave
* Embellishments - Pearls Basic Jewels (7) colored with Daffodil Delight (dark)

There are many more ways to create cards with diagonal cuts. I hope my cards will inspire you to use diagonal cut backgrounds on your cards!

BABY WIPE STAMP PAD TECHNIQUE - AN OLDIE BUT A GOODY!

Hi Stampers!

I enjoy trying new stamping techniques, but I also enjoy using techniques that have been around for a while. Today’s technique is one of the first I learned when I started stamping over 15 years ago. The baby wipe stamp pad technique is easy to learn, and lets you create a uniquely colored ink pad for your project.

Here are some cards I created using the baby wipe stamp pad technique:

The feather image was stamped using Crumb Cake, Gray Granite, and Sahara Sand inks. The subtle color variation provides some depth and dimension as well as a monochromatic look.

The feather image is from the TASTEFUL TOUCHES stamp set. This stamp set is featured in the Stampin’ Up!®️ 2021-2022 Annual Catalog.

TASTEFUL TOUCHES

BABY WIPE STAMP PAD TECHNIQUE

SUPPLIES:
* Ink Refills; 3-4 colors
* Silicone Craft Sheet, Clear Block (I recommend Block D or larger), a plate, or other non porous surface.
* A baby wipe - fold it in half twice.

HOW TO:

1. Add 8-10 drops of one color to the baby wipe.

2. Do the same with the second color.

3. Do the same with the third  color. If you have chosen a 4th color add it.

4. Use you baby wipe stamp pad just like any other to ink up your stamp.

5. Stamp the image as usual.

6. If you are stamping a background panel, continue stamping until the panel is finished.

7. Use the stamped image / panel on your card.

SUPPLIES FOR THIS CARD:
* Basic White card base 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”.
* Basic White cardstock cut at 3” x 3 1/2” for focal panel.

* Note - for the feather images on the card base I stamped off on scrap paper before Stampin on the card base.

SUPPLIES FOR THIS CARD:
* Crumb Cake card base 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”
* Basic White cardstock cut at 3” x 3 1/2” for focal image.
* Crumb Cake cardstock cut at 3 1/4” x 3 3/4” for focal image mat.
* Basic White and Crumb Cake cardstock appropriate size for greeting.
* Crumb Cake ink
* Blending Brush
* Crumb Cake twine
* DSP (In Good Taste)
* Adhesive and dimensionals for the focal panel.

* Note - After stamping the focal panel and the sentiment I went over each piece with a blending brush inked with Crumb Cake.

For a more noticeable color differentiation use a very light color, a medium shade, and a dark shade. Below is a card I made using Fresh Freesia, Highland Heather, and Gorgeous Grape for the floral images, and Old Olive and Pear Pizzazz for the leaves. I used the HYDRANGEA HAVEN stamp set found the Stampin’ Up! 2021-2022 Annual Catalog.

HYDRANGEA HAVEN

This technique is easy and the “stamp pad” will have enough ink to make several cards. I hope you give the baby wipe stamp pad technique a try.

That’ all for today. Thank you so much for stopping by.  Until next time…

CARD LAYOUTS THAT USE SCRAPS

Hi Stampers,

Today I have two similar card layouts to share with you. One landscape layout and one portrait version of the layout. These layouts are perfect for using up scraps of Designer Series Paper (DSP) and scraps of cardstock. With the exception of the card bases, all the cardstock mats and DSP were cut from scraps. I created feminine and masculine versions of each layout. Let’s take a look at the cards.

Here are the feminine versions of the card along with cutting dimensions and supply lists.

LANDSCAPE VERSION

Here are the supplies needed to make this card:

* The Rococo Rose card base is 8 1/2”x  4 /4”; scored and folded at 4 1/4”
* Two pieces of Basic White - one at 3 1/4” square, the other at 3” x 1 1/4”
* Two pieces of Hydrangea Hill DSP - one at 3” square, the other 2 3/4” x 1”. (Mini Catalog)
* Extra Scraps of Rococo Rose and Basic White cardstock.
* Brilliant Wings Dies
* Rococo Rose ink.
* Ahhesives of your choice and dimensionals.
* Greeting stamp of your choice. (The Happy Birthday is from Timeless Tulips - Annual Catalog)

BRILLIANT WINGS DIES

*The BRILLIANT WINGS DIES are part of the BUTTERFLY BOUQUET COLLECTION and available now. For details click HERE

PORTRAIT VERSION

Here are the supplies needed to make this card:

* The Rococo Rose card base is 11” x 4 1/4” - scored and folded at 5 1/2”.
* Two pieces of Basic White - one at 5 1/4”x 1 3/4” and one 2 3/4” square.
* Two pieces of Hydrangea Hill DSP - one at 5” x 1 1/2” and one 2 1/2” square. (Mini Catalog)
* Extra scraps of Rococo Rose and Basic White.
* Small Bloom Punch. (Annual Catalog)
* Tasteful Labels Dies. (Annual Catalog)
* Rococo Rose Ink
* Adhesive of your choice and dimensionals.
* Greeting of your choice. (The “Hello” is from Timeless Tropical - Annual Catalog).

SMALL BLOOM PUNCH & A DIE FROM THE TASTEFUL LABELS DIES

To assemble the card; layer the DSP on the Basic White cardstock. Adhere the assembled pieces to the card base using the sample cards as a guide. Die cut or punch out the remaining elements. Stamp the greeting. For the landscape version of this card I stamped the greeting on a scrap of Basic White and cut it out by hand. I adhered this to a scrap piece of Rococo Rose and cut it out by hand as well. Both sentiments are attached to the card with dimensionals. The white center of the flower was punched from Basic White using a regular hole punch. It is adhered with liquid glue.

Here are the masculine versions of the cards. The cutting dimensions for these cards are the same as for the cards above. The card bases are Mossy Meadow. The mats are Pear Pizzazz. The DSP is from Hydrangea Hill DSP. (Mimi Catalog)

LANDSCAPE VERSION

The greetings for these cards is from the Ride the Range stamp set (Mini Catalog). The trees images are from the Mountain Air stamp set and were die cut with the Majestic Mountains Dies. (Both items are found in the Annual Catalog).

Why not pull out your scraps, and give these layouts a try. Until next time...
