USING FOILED PAPER TO CREATE TAGS & CARDS - A STAMP HAPPY HOLIDAYS POST

Hi Stampers,

I have a lot of foiled papers! A lot!!!! If you gave been creating cards for long, I bet you have a little stash of foiled papers too! It’s time to pull out those shiny papers and put them to work! 

Today I am sharing a couple of card ideas and ideas for tags, and each project (with one exception) uses foiled papers!  Here is a look at my sample projects:

FAUX ORNAMENT CARDS

SUPPLIES FOR THESE CARDS

* Stamp sets - Christmas Classics (greeting) and Joy to You (inside greeting) 

* Card bases - Granny Apple Green / Melon Mambo cardstock- 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”

* Basic White cardstock - 2 pieces per card, layer for front of card and one for inside panel - 5” x 3 3/4”

* Foil paper - Melon Mambo and Granny Apple Green

NOTE 

* Die cut circles from the foil paper first, then emboss them.

* Use ribbon to create bows, attach bows with glue dots. Use a paper piercer or other tool to fold the glue dot in half, then fold it in half again.  

DIE CUT POSITIVE & NEGATIVE CHRISTMAS TREE CARDS

These cards are sort of a “two for one” type of card as the positive image (die cut tree) and the negative image (layer with space where shape was die cut) are used to create two cards. For the first the Christmas tree shape is die cut from the center of the mat layer. Next I used an embossing folder and embossed the mat layer including the die cut part. (This will be used for the second card.) Then I die cut the Christmas tree image from a piece of foiled paper. I adhered the mat layer to the card base. Then I placed dimensionals on the back side of the foiled paper die cut and lined it up on the mat layer. Die cutting the shape from the mat layer leaves a bit of an impression that serves as an “outline” for the foiled tree image. This adds a bit more dimension and definition to the tree.

The second card is created using the tree image die cut from the mat layer of the first card. The tree is adhered to a mat layer using dimensionals.

NO FOILED PAPER, BUT STILL SOME SHINE

This card breaks the rule for this post - no foil!!!  It does use the die cut from the background panel of the previous card.

SUPPLIES FOR THIS CARD

* Stamp sets - same as for previous card

* Card base - Lost Lagoon cardstock cut at 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”

* Inside panel - Basic White cardstock cut at 5” x 3 3/4”

* Mat for focal image - One Horse Open Sleigh DSP cut at 5” x 3 3/4”

* Die cut tree image from previous card’s mat layer - I used a sponge dauber and ink to color the tree

* Ink - Lost Lagoon

* Embossing Folder - Snowflake Sky

* Embellishment - Festive Pearls - Silver - 9

* Adhesive and dimensionals

TAGS

* For all tags I used the Tailor Made Tags Dies. If you do not have these dies, you can create tags with a similar look. See video and refer to Template chart found further down this page.

* The tag measure about 2” x a bit less than 4”, and consist of two layers; the foiled paper and Basic White cardstock.

* I cut the Specialty DSP (foiled paper) in strips 2” wide x 12” long, and strips of Basic White cardstock 2” wide by 11” long. I lined up the top end of the foiled paper with the top end of the cardstock, placed my die at the top of the stacked papers, secured it with low tack tape and ran it through the die cut machine. Keeping the papers together, I repeated the process. Next I separated the remaining foiled paper from the cardstock. ( I saved the remaining piece of cardstock to use for sentiments and the like.) I lined up the remaining foiled paper with another strip of cardstock and repeated the process.

* When using the Tailor Made Tags Dies and cutting both layers of the tag at the same time I found the faux stitching around the edge of the tag die pressed the two pieces of paper together and held well enough I needed no adhesive to hold the two layers of the tag together. Adding the ribbon to the top also helped hold the two pieces together.

* For all tags I used the To/From stamp from the Joy of Noel stamp set.

* For each tag the ribbon is cut at 6” long, doubled, slipped through the hole and the tails pulled through the loop.

* Some supplies I used for these tags are no longer available. Use what you have in your stash. In general my projects are created using items that can be ordered from Stampin’ Up!®️, but sometime I use retired items. I believe in practicing what I preach, and I do encourage you to take the ideas I show and create them using what you have on hand.

SUPPLIES

* Gold Glimmer Paper (no longer available) - Alternative: More Dazzle Specialty Paper

* Basic White cardstock

* Crumb Cake Ink (to stamp NOEL) and to stamp the to/from on back of tags

TARTAN FOIL TAGS

SUPPLIES

DIAGONAL CORNERS TAGS WITHOUT A DIE

* Cut foiled paper and cardstock at 2” x 4” for each tag

* Mark corner on the “wrong” sides (sides that will not be showing) of the foiled paper and the cardstock, then cut the corners.

* Adhere the two pieces together.

* Use a Crop-a-dile (hole punch) to punch a hole near the top of the tag.

* Thread Ribbon through the hole and tie.

STRATEGIES FOR CREATING HOLIDAY CARDS WHEN TIME IS RUNNING OUT - A STAMP HAPPY HOLIDAYS POST

Hi Stampers!

November is here, and if you have yet to begin your Christmas cards you might be feeling a bit stressed. Not to worry, there is still time to create festive Christmas cards. You just need a plan of attack or a strategy that keeps you focused, streamlines choices, yet allows for variation in card designs. Today I am sharing my strategy based on on the points I just mentioned. Before we get into the specifics of the strategy, let’s take a look at today’s sample cards:

For these cards I used items from the Joy of Christmas Suite. I used the JOY OF NOEL BUNDLE, the  CHRISTMAS CLASSICS STAMP SET, and the JOY OF CHRISTMAS 12” x 12” DSP.

STRATEGIES FOR CREATING CHRISTMAS CARDS WHEN TIME IS RUNNING OUT

1. Select 1 or 2 simple and versatile card layouts

    * Simple layouts include cards with limited layering.

    * Choose layouts that work well in both portrait and landscape orientation for variety.

    * This is not the time for complicated fun folds, but simple fun folds like Joy Fold cards or 

       Gate Fold cards go together quickly, and add a bit of a twist to the normal card fold.

2. Select stamp sets that have coordinating dies. This allows for more focal image options.

3. Select patterned paper (DSP) from a single collection. This allows you to mix and match patterns without worrying about whether or not the colors and patterns match. 

4. Choose card bases that are neutral (Basic White, Very Vanilla, CrumbCake, Night of Navy, etc.) or coordinate with colors in the DSP.

     * Stampin’ Up!®️ DSP packaging list the colors included in that collection. This

        information is also included in the product description found in the Stampin’ Up!

      online Store.

5. Select 2-3 ink colors that coordinate with the DSP or cardstock.

6. Add a bit of shimmer and shine, but keep embellishments simple.

    * Rhinestone Basic Jewels are versatile. Use them as is, or custom color them with 

       Stampin’ Blends Markers (alcohol markers).

    * You can never go wrong with silver or gold gems or pearls on Christmas cards.

    * Wink of Stella is an easy way to add shimmer without the bumps and bulk of gems.

7. Never underestimate the impact of dimensionals. They are an easy way to add a little some a little something extra to a card.

Now it is just a matter of preparing card bases, cardstock panels, and DSP. Next do your stamping and / or coloring, and die cutting. Then assemble your cards. Sign your cards, Place them in addressed envelopes, add a stamp, and mail. Now you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the season!!! Or at least have one item crossed off on your Holiday To Do List!!!

MY SAMPLE CARDS

* For all my sample cards I used the stamp sets, dies, and DSP mentioned earlier. 

* All card bases are A-2 size - 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” scored and folded at 4 1/4”.

* Most cards have an inside panel of Basic White or other neutral light colored cardstock cut at 5” x 3 3/4” or 5 1/4” x 4”.

BASIC ONE LAYER CARDS

These cards are quite basic, but still very festive. They consist of a card base, one layer of DSP,  plus a focal image and greeting. The greeting  can be the focal image. These cards can be made in portrait or landscape orientation.

* Cardstock - Garden Green and Basic White

* Inks - Garden Green, Cherry Cobbler

* Rhinestones - 3 colored with Cherry Cobbler (dark) Stampin’ Blend

* Stylish Shapes Dies - Circles, largest and next largest

ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES

* Cardstock - Crumb Cake for card base and to stamp focal image; Cherry Cobbler to die cut letters

* Inks - Pecan Pie; Water Color Pencils - Cherry Cobbler, Garden Green, Granny Apple Green; Blender Pen, Wink of Stella

* Dimensionals

DSP PANEL AND STRIP CARDS

Each of these cards require a panel of DSP that is 2” wide and a coordinating piece of DSP that is 3/4” wide. The length of these DSP pieces depends on whether you want the panel and strip to run from one end of the cardbase to the other, or if you wish to mount  the DSP pieces on a separate piece of Basic White or other neutral cardstock ( 5” x 3 3/4”) to create a framed look. Remember these cards can be oriented as landscape or portrait cards.

* Focal panel / greeting - Basic White cardstock cut at 5” x 3 3/4”

* Ink - Shaded Spruce

NOTES

* This card base is an example of using a neutral color of cardstock that is not included in the color scheme of the DSP, but still coordinates beautifully. 

* The portrait orientation of this card layout calls for a greeting that is tall and narrow. If you do not have a greeting like that in your stash, try the repeating greeting technique. For this card I simply stamped the “Peace on Earth greeting 3 times.

If you are finished with your Christmas cards for this year, congratulations! I am so happy you met your goal. If you are closing in on finishing your cards, that is great! You are on course!!! If you have yet to start creating you card, that is okay. You still have time. If the strategy I suggested works for you, great! If you need to tweak it a bit and make it your own that is terrific. If you need a completely different strategy, that is fine too. The important thing is you can begin creating your cards knowing you will finish them in time to send Christmas greeting to all your friends and family. No need to panic! You’ve got this!!!

FUN SIZED CARDS FULL OF CHEERFUL CHRISTMAS GREETINGS - A STAMP HAPPY HOLIDAYS POST

Hi Stampers, 

We have all heard old sayings like; bigger is not always better, and good things come in small packages. Today I thought we would take a look cards that prove both these adages. That is right, today’s cards are fun size cards - smaller versions of familiar card styles. Let’s take a look!

Yes, I pulled out my much loved JOLLY WORDS stamp set to create these cards. But page down to see the same card styles made using the CHRISTMAS CLASSICS stamp set. To me the JOLLY WORDS stamp set is the perfect mix of whimsy and nostalgia! Look at those cards; they are mini, but mighty.  I find taking a break from A-2 cards gives me new perspectives. I enjoy the challenge of creating interesting designs on a smaller canvas, so to speak.

As you might have guessed the Santa with his sleigh card is a mini slimline card. The ‘Tis the Season Card is a 4 1/4” square card as opposed to the rectangular A-2 card. The joy card is a mini easel card. The mini slimline card will fit nicely inside a letter sized envelope. I use A-2 envelopes (Stampin! Up!®️ medium envelopes) for the square card and the mini easel card. The fit just fine inside, and cost less to mail than cards in square envelopes.

* Cut DSP at 2 1/2” x 6”

* Apply adhesive to flap.

* Place DSP on flap paying attention to any directional patterns.

* Trim away excess DSP
